On tough times and collective responsibility
I really didn’t want to write about this, but then I sat in front of my laptop thinking ‘I want to write about something’ and here we go…
Given the subject is COVID-19, the one promise I’ll make is that you’ll get no advice nor politics from me but just some common-sense points that I want to make for my own personal sake.
The situation is unprecedented and indeed quite tragic – if anything because it is impacting on our ability to cope – collectively as a society – be it on a very practical level or emotionally whilst we fantasise on potential outcomes.
Some are affected more than others at the moment and whilst I really don’t want to discuss who is worse or better off here – big businesses, small businesses, whatever – I do think that everyone needs to stop putting themselves first for once and think about the big picture – my brother called it ‘collective responsibility’.
I was due to go to Lanzarote this weekend and despite my plane was flying today and I would have potentially been safer there than here in London, I decided to stay home.
Do I deserve a medal? No.
So why am I even talking about this? Because when my brother talked about collective responsibility something clicked and I thought this would be the best thing to do under the circumstances. I don’t think it would have been appropriate for me to enjoy my holiday when others are going through a very tough time.
This is all very real to me – I have family in Italy being affected so all I want to say is that perhaps for once we should all think about our fellow human beings and accept the fact that we are all in this together, so instead of being selfish and fighting over the last toilet roll in the supermarket, let’s try to be kind and use common-sense, shall we?
PS= I get my toilet rolls from a company called Who Gives A Crap – aside from the good they do, it means I get mine delivered and have plenty left if you need any 😉
