Why I changed my mind

You know how they say ‘some people never change’? I suppose it might depend on what we are referring to in context, however I fundamentally believe that everyone has the ability to change.

Specifically, when we think about behaviours and opinions – to my mind at least – unless you do change, you’ll never grow.

For a long time I have believed that not changing your mind about something showed strength. I admired the consistency and the firmness of thought, but actually, in time I realised the opposite is true: it takes strength to realise your point of view was flawed and as a result of that realisation, you changed. You adapted. You grew.

Because life is not black or white – things change all the time – and for those of us who like hard facts, new ‘evidence’ often comes to the surface and that is to be considered too.

Aside from what’s happening around us, we – as individuals – are exposed to new and different experiences all the time, and that makes us change our course of action, reflect on things and react in ways that perhaps we had not envisaged before.

This act of taking in new evidence, facts, ideas and experiences makes us see things differently and indeed change our mind about people, things and thoughts even when we thought we never would.

So if you are changing your mind about something, don’t beat yourself up like I used to… it is a good thing – it means you have considered your newly acquired information and that has given you a new perfective.

That’s why I have changed my mind about changing my mind.
