The meaning of Easter
Did you know that Easter was originally a pagan celebration of renewal and rebirth?
It was originally celebrated in early spring and it honoured the pagan Saxon goddess Eastre who symbolised the cycles of Nature, re-growth and new life.
Interestingly, the word Easter comes from her name but it is also in the etymology of the word oestrogen, a hormone linked to the female cycle.
Eggs and bunnies are part of the symbology of Easter because during paganism they were considered sacred to the goddess and represented renewal and fertility.
I’m not entirely sure how chocolate came into the picture but it is certainly a good addition!
Have a good one!
