Sense of purpose
Have you ever thought about what is the change you want to see in the world? I think this is the first step to defining your sense of purpose. It doesn’t need to be something grand, in fact I think the more specific and tangible it is, the better.
Another way of asking yourself the same question is ‘what gets me out of bed every day and why does it matter to me personally?’. If you want to see a change in the world, what can you do personally to make it happen?
I think asking ourselves these questions every now and again is not only useful to give us a sense of direction, it is also a great way to keep stress under control and feel like we are doing something good, whatever that means to us.
What we think as our sense of purpose might change over time and personally, I often think it’s a combination of things for each of us. I have recently started to see a pattern in the things I do and the way I operate which made me realise that I might have found my overarching sense of purpose: I want to be helpful. I want to offer my experience, skills and thoughts to the world with a view that someone might find them helpful.
Probably not the light bulb moment you were expecting, but often it is the little things that made the big changes.
